Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political campaigns are central to the democratic process, as they provide voters with information about political parties, candidates, and their policy proposals. In Birnin Kebbi LGA, political campaigns are not only about conveying policy messages but also about influencing voter perceptions, preferences, and trust in the electoral system. The integrity of the electoral process is often tested during political campaigns, particularly when misinformation, negative campaigning, and irregularities are prevalent. Electoral integrity, defined as the fairness, transparency, and inclusiveness of elections, is critical for ensuring the legitimacy of elected leaders and maintaining public confidence in democratic systems (Mustapha, 2023).
In Birnin Kebbi LGA, political campaigns have the potential to either reinforce or undermine electoral integrity, depending on the strategies used by political actors. This study will explore how political campaigns influence the public's trust in the electoral process and the overall legitimacy of local elections. It will examine the role of campaign strategies, such as voter persuasion tactics and the use of media, in shaping voter perceptions of electoral fairness and integrity.
